Malice in Sunderland

by Arieanna on November 5th, 2006

Mischa to star in Malice in Sunderland, a modern remake of Alice in Wonderland. Here is the lowdown from Moviehole:

A second perverse take on the fairytale classic ‘Alice in Wonderland’ – the other being American McGee’s “Alice”, which Sarah Michelle Gellar is attached to don the ashen dress for - has got that illuminated emerald light.

This one, called “Malice in Sunderland”, will star former “OC” waif Mischa Barton.

According to Production Weekly, the Jayson Rothwell-written pic sees Barton playing an American student who is hit by a London taxi and finds herself disoriented in Sunderland, where she has to navigate a macabre underworld of characters. Simon Fellows will direct.

“Malice” is set to go before the cameras early next year in London.

Sounds very interesting, and a big role for Mischa!

    I’m from Sunderland too.
Why Sunderland? (other than because it rhymes)
Mischa will have to ‘navigate a macabre underworld of characters.’
    How very apt.

Sunderland will have been chosen, not just because it sounds like Wonderland, but the orginal writer (Lewis Carol), based the story on Sunderland. He was a visitor to the region for many years and also wrote some of his later novels there.

His family were from Whitburn, there is still a memorial in Whitburn library.

If you’re interested in learning more about the link between Alice in Wonderland, Lewis Carol and Sunderland get this graphic novel by Bryan Talbert, it’s called “Alice in Sunderland”.

    hello everybody!!!

I can’t wait to watch Malice in Sunderland! I just wish it’d come out already!!! It’ll be awesome especially with Mischa Barton. Finally a long anticipated escape from dull reality (yes!)…..

If worst comes to worst I’ll be called Malice in Sunderland on top of Alice in wonderland and Alice the camel…..hahaha

the original alice in wonderland was written by an author from sunderland so that is probably why
